Ideal Polymer Clay for Kids
At Klay Master, we’ve explored several types of clay to find the best option for our kids’ workshops. Our favourite? Polymer clay, specifically the FIMO range, including FIMO Soft and FIMO Effect. Why do we love it? Because it’s colourful, easy to work with, and lets kids create a finished, vibrant piece of art in just about an hour, without needing toxic glazes or waiting for multiple firings in a professional ceramic kiln.
Why We Love Polymer Clay
Polymer clay, particularly FIMO, offers the perfect texture for young artists. Once softened, it maintains a firm but not-too-soft consistency, ideal for little hands that are still developing fine motor skills. The firmness of the clay helps kids with shaping and moulding, allowing them to focus on their creativity rather than struggling with overly soft or sticky material.
Another big advantage of polymer clay is that it can be baked in any regular household oven. This eliminates the need for professional kilns, making it a more accessible activity. Whether at home or in a workshop, kids can enjoy turning their creations into lasting works of art, and if they get hooked, polymer clay provides an excellent foundation for developing 3D visualisation skills.
FIMO’s Unique Benefits
FIMO clay bonds beautifully during baking, even if parts are simply pressed together, they’ll fuse securely. This makes it easy for kids to craft detailed designs without worrying about pieces falling apart. FIMO Effect is especially fun, offering glittery and metallic finishes that bring an extra touch of excitement to any project. Kids love the glitter FIMO Effect colours, and while we’ve found the grey silver and metallic shades to be a little on the firm side.
The real showstopper is the glow-in-the-dark FIMO! It's an essential addition to any Klay Master workshop, guaranteed to add some bling and excitement. Kids love it, and it's a great way to motivate those who may be falling behind. A "big reveal" at the end of the workshop, where everyone gets to add a little bit of glow embellishment to their creation, gives a fun incentive for everyone to finish strong.
Polymer Clay vs. Other Clays
Not all polymer clays are the same. Some brands are firmer and more suitable for fine jewelry or professional crafting, but FIMO Soft and FIMO Effect are just right for kids. These varieties are user-friendly, versatile, and trusted by both beginners and seasoned crafters alike.
Air-dry sculptures clay, by contrast, is more tricky when it comes to connecting parts and requires painting after drying. Puffy air-dry clays, while soft and fun, tend to be too squishy for kids' hands, making it harder to control the shapes they’re creating.
Ceramic clays, like pottery white clay or terracotta, are soft and sticky, which can make them a messy challenge for younger children. They also require access to a professional potter’s kiln to be fired properly for finishing. This type of clay is excellent for more advanced projects, but it comes with risks, such as air bubbles causing pieces to explode in the kiln, and the additional glazing step can be a barrier for many. While working with ceramic clay can be an amazing experience, it’s not as accessible as polymer clay for everyday crafting.
A Handy Tip for Polymer Clay
When choosing polymer clay, it’s important to avoid clay that is hard and crumbly. If it feels crumbly, it means the clay is either old or has been exposed to a warm environment, such as a shipping container sitting in the sun. The plasticiser, which makes polymer clay pliable, can leach out over time, leading to that crumbly texture. While it is possible to condition hard clay using hand power or adding a softener, this requires extra effort and may not be suitable for kids.
To avoid this, always shop from reputable stores, and if you’re visiting in person, give the clay a firm squeeze with your fingertips. If the clay feels slightly supple when pressed, you’ll know it’s ideal for kids and ready for use.
The Perfect Clay for Kids
Polymer clay offers the perfect combination of durability, creativity, and accessibility. At Klay Master, we’ve chosen polymer clay for our workshops because it allows kids to craft with ease and success. With polymer clay, they can create bright, long-lasting pieces of art without the complexities of other types of clay. Whether they’re new to crafting or looking to improve their skills, polymer clay opens up a world of creative possibilities for kids of all ages!
